Who doesn’t love a great story told over a beer or two? Grandma Mary Smith certainly did, and you’ll love it too – provided, of course, that the story is told over an ice-cold Mary Smith 2020 Brut Pilsner. Aptly named for the grandmother of Head Brewer Chris to pay homage to a great lady, Mary Smith 2020 is indeed a great beer.
Bringing the traditions of old to the new world
This Brut Pilsner has paired 2 new world hops and utilisedtwoold world yeast strains, resulting in a clean, crisp beer with nice and restrained fruity hop flavours. The combination of Vienna malted barley – known for its malty-sweet smoothness, and Pilsner malted barleyfor its thinner and crispier tastes, produces a refreshingbeverage with a light golden colouring.Known for its use in ciders and dry wines, the team blended a champagne yeast with a Swisslager yeast strain, resulting in a 5.1% alcohol volume for the Mary Smith 2020 Brut Pilsner. World famous Nelson Sauvin hops is what gives this pilsner its fruity touches and tropical aroma, whilst the Green Bullet hops – known for its use in New Zealand’s favourite beer, Steinlager– is a touch more herbaceous. The final resultis an aromatic and dry pilsner.
It’s the family ties that bind
Chris’ great grandfather started his first brewery in Hororata, near Christchurch in the late 1880’s and following in those family beer-brewing footsteps, Zeelandt Brewery was established in Hawke’s Bay in 2012, over 100 years later. Though the family tradition may have skipped a generation or two, family is still an important part of Zeelandt Brewery, as one can see with the annual special release brew, Mary Smith – named lovingly after Chris’ grandmother. The original Mary Smith was a strong, unique lady hailing from The Blue Mountains in Australia, and with each new Mary Smith beer release, Chris and the team at Zeelandt Brewery aim for a brew that reflects that character, carrying her memory into the glasses of people in New Zealand and around the world.
‘Tis the season
Spring in New Zealand sees the entire country bursting with new life and what better time of the year to launch the annual Mary Smith 2020 than when the sun begins to shinebrightly, and people are heading outside to enjoy a beer or two in the garden. The fruity, dry flavours in the Mary Smith 2020 are perfect as the weather starts to warm up, ideal for all those pre-Christmas celebrations. This is a unique beer with a great story, fit for the finest of storytellers.
